Whether it’s on the beach or on a court, volleyball is growing in popularity. However, while volleyball is a relatively low-risk sport, many players find themselves suffering from volleyball-related injuries. One area commonly affected by volleyball is the ankles. This is because volleyball involves large amounts of jumping, as well as sudden twisting and turning movements, giving rise to the possibility of sprains and fractures in the ankles.

Research in the field of sports medicine has indicated that poor posture, including posture ‘sway’ may increase the likelihood of experiencing ankle injury. Your local chiropractor may be able to help you correct your posture, diminishing sway, and decreasing the risk that you’ll suffer an ankle injury when playing volleyball.

Chiropractic care has been found to be effective and prompt in the treatment of ankle sprains. A recent study examining the efficacy of chiropractic care on patients suffering from ankle sprains found that chiropractic care may help to reduce pain and improve the function and range of motion of the ankle. Chiropractic care was found to be more effective than ultrasound treatments for these patients.

Chiropractors will also often recommend using ankle braces or undertaking proprioceptive training to help reduce the likelihood of ankle sprains when playing volleyball.
