Despite being relatively common, thoracic outlet syndrome, or TOS, is not especially well-known. TOS refers to a group of conditions that may arise when the nerves of blood vessels housed in the area between the first rib and the collarbone become compressed or constricted.

TOS symptoms include a sensation of pain throughout the shoulder area, as well as the neck and the arms. TOS sufferers may also experience tingling or numbness in their fingers. They may also find it increasingly difficult to perform tasks involving fine motor skills, and may find it harder to grip or hold things.

One of the leading causes of TOS is poor posture. Slumping forward – a position that typically causes the shoulders to slouch and the head to press forward – may put significant pressure on the blood vessels and the nerves in the thoracic outlet. Sitting for long periods with poor posture may increase the risk of TOS. Other causes of TOS include heavy lifting or performing repetitive tasks. Past injuries may also develop into TOS over time.

Chiropractors recommend that TOS patients look towards conservative treatment approaches before considering surgery for their problem. Conservative approaches include chiropractic care, which may involve manipulations and stretching exercises.
