Recent research has indicated that drinking too much soft drink may result in muscle problems. The research, published in the International Journal of Clinical Practice points out that increased consumption of soft drinks may lead to health issues such as dental problems, weak bones, metabolic syndrome issues, and type 2 diabetes.
The report’s author, Dr Moses Elisaf, also noted that over-consumption of soft drinks such as cola may also lead to a condition called hypokalemia. This condition refers to a syndrome where potassium levels slump, resulting in decreased muscle function.
The paper, a research review, examined patients who were drinking between two and nine litres of cola-flavoured soft drinks each day. The patients reported symptoms ranging from weakness of the muscles through to severe paralysis. Other side effects included appetite loss, fatigue, and even vomiting.
While the patients typically recovered after stopping their over-consumption of cola-flavoured drinks and began taking potassium supplements, they may be at increased risk of longer-term issues such as impaired heart function.
