The shelves lining the interior of your local supermarket are brimming with low-hassle, quick and easy meal ideals that often make claims about being healthy. Unfortunately, you can’t always believe what you read. Many of these products are full of preservatives and potentially harmful chemicals.
While processed foods are cheap and easy, they can also be low in nutrients. Worse, many of the chemicals in these foods have been linked to ailments such as heart disease, obesity, and even cancer. And the more you spend on processed foods, the less you’re spending on fresh fruit and vegetables.
Processed foods are typically high in preservatives. Processed meats such as hot dogs, lunch meats, and cured meats such as salami are often brimming with nitrites and nitrates, both of which have been linked to issues such as asthma, nausea and vomiting, and headaches. Research has also indicated that nitrites increase the risk of falling ill with sicknesses such as lung diseases, including serious illnesses such as chronic bronchitis and even emphysema.
Sweeteners such as saccharine and aspartame are also found in many processed foods. These artificial sweeteners are sugar substitutes, and have been linked with a host of side effects, including allergies, headaches, hyperactivity, behavioural issues in children, and insomnia.
