Once known as reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome (RSDS), the complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a chronic syndrome typically affecting the extremities of the body. CRPS is usually characterised by a burning pain, swelling, and general tenderness in the affected area.
Chiropractic care may be of some benefit in alleviating the pain and discomfort associated with CRPS.
One recent study points out that spinal manipulation, the process of spinal adjustment undertaken by chiropractors, may help alleviate CRPS symptoms. A recent case study in the Journal of the Canadian Chiropractic Association found that a middle-aged women complaining of symptoms consistent with CRPS found relief from her symptoms after a chiropractic care program. The woman’s pain reduced substantially, while her motor sills and grip strength improved.
