Statins, also known as reductase inhibitors, are often prescribed to individuals suffering from high cholesterol. However, a recent literature review from the University of California San Diego and the University of California Irvine has indicated that these medications may have a variety of harmful side effects. Statins change the functioning of the body at a biochemical level, and spark a chemical domino-effect that may be hazardous to the user.
The researchers point out the muscle problems are one of the most commonly documented side effects of statins. However, statins have also been linked to widespread and wide-ranging problems including peripheral neuropathy in the fingers and toes (numbness or pain in the extremities), and even cognitive problems.
If you take statins, be sure to first consult with your medical doctor if you plan to discontinue their use. The best approach to high cholesterol is to take a preventative rather than curative approach. Your chiropractor may be able to help you plan a holistic, preventative approach to keep your cholesterol in check.
