Chemicals are being used in greater quantities to help ensure that our food grows better and that it remains fresh for longer. One of the most commonly used groups of chemicals is nitrates. Nitrates are frequently used in fertilisers, and are also used as a preservative for meat products. Chiropractor, who promote drug-free, holistic treatment processes, are increasingly expressing concerns over the amounts of nitrates found in both our environment, and also in consumables. Worse, we appear to be seeing health-related effects from these elevated nitrate levels.

Research has indicated potential links between nitrates and cancers, and new research is beginning to find evidence of a link between nitrates and other illnesses and ailments. Alzheimer’s is one disease thought to be linked to nitrates.

A recently published study examined the effects of nitrates on rats. The rats used in the study were injected with a nitrate compound, and were then monitored with regard to the development of diseases and disorders. Many of the rates developed illnesses such as type 2 diabetes; some also showed symptoms consistent with Alzheimer’s. The authors of the study concluded that preventing our exposure to nitrates and improving our detection of nitrate exposure may be beneficial in helping reduce the effects of nitrates, and also to catching the signs of nitrate-related diseases while still in their early stages.
