We all know how important physical exercise is to maintaining our physical health, but fewer people are aware of the importance of mental exercise to the health of our brains. New research has found that activities that stimulate the brain may help keep our brains healthy. Better yet, these mental exercise activities may also help to prevent cognitive degeneration, and may be valuable in helping stave off the mental decline associated with diseases such as dementia and Alzheimer’s.
A recent study published in the journal Neurology, the publication of the American Academy of Neurology, has indicated that people who exercise their brain through activities such as writing, reading, or even playing card games, may be able to stave off the memory-related decline found in dementia patients.
Past research has also shown that volunteering or participating in social activities may help to stave off cognitive degeneration. These activities may also help to prevent motor function decline, according to a report in the Archives of Internal Medicine.
You can increase the benefits of your brain exercise activities by mixing and matching them with other valuable activities such as performing volunteer work or participating in social activities. Keep your brain and your conscience healthy by considering volunteering to read books to the elderly or the ill, play a game or cards or two with hospice residents, or participate in or host a discussion group.
