Recent research has indicated that a third of autism cases may have their roots in environmental, rather than physical, factors. Autism is a condition that results in an impaired ability to relate to or communicate with others. Depending on the severity of their condition, autism sufferers may rely on strict routines, engage in repetitive behaviours, and struggle with communication and language.

Autism ostensibly stems from a brain abnormality in certain areas of the brain. The nerve cells in these affected areas are usually smaller in autism sufferers, and their connections with other parts of the brain are typically stunted.

Some researchers theorise that autism diagnosis may be linked to a dysfunction of the immune system, and that a blow or shock to the immune system during critical development stages may have some effect on the development of autism.

Others believe that environmental factors may trigger autism in those children who are already genetically vulnerable to developing autism. These environmental factors may include triggers such as exposure to chemicals in household cleaners, over-exposure to television and video games, and deficiencies in vitamin D. The suggestion is that these issues are present in 30% of autism cases.
